Tobacco

One of the best Tobacco in the world.

Men harvesting tobacco in Pinar del Rio. Tobacco is an important crop in Cuba and high quality Cuban cigars are famous around the world.

History of Pinar del Rio

The province relies on tobacco farming, with Pinar del Río producing 70% of Cuba's crop, used to make the cigars that are so prized overseas. The best tobacco, used for more expensive cigar brands, is grown in the flat lands of San Juan y Martinez.

Pinar del Rio is noted for its fertile soil and vegetation. More pineapples, riceand tobacco are produced here than in any other of the Cuban provinces. Petroleum fields are scattered throughout this westernmost section of Cuba while the great Matahambre mines are famous for their rich copper output.Of geologic and scenic interest is the hillockstrewn of Vinales, fringed by the blue-toned Organos mountains. Several resosrts are found in the province. Its capital city is the center of excursions to beaches as well as to hunting and fishing grounds.

Tourism in Pinar del Rio

Turism is also an important part of the province’s economy. Though the town of Pinar del Río which is the provincial capital has some places of cultural and historical interest, most attractions are to be found in rural or natural settings. A major destination is the Valley of Vinales, it is located in the Sierra de los Organos, north of the town of Vinales. Designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999 because of its natural beauty and the traditional agricultural techniques which continue to used in the cultivation of tobacco and other crops there, the valley is a popular hiking and rock climbing location.

These people are in the middle of a festival.

Las Terrazas

Las Terrazas has recently adapted itself to host tourists. The type of tourism that this community hopes to attract is different from that of other parts of the country, however. The goal is to provide tourists with an enjoyable stay at the park but not to surround them with luxury. Thus, the biosphere provides many ways for tourists staying at hotels near the town to enjoy the area's natural beauty, such as hiking through the extensive network of trails, and swimming in los Baños de San Juan. The model of tourism for Las Terrazas also encourages interaction between tourists and the people of the area. The overall effect is to create an enjoyable tourist experience that is not loud.It is a peaceful and relaxing place.
